But do you Shoot Portraits?

One thing you’ll always see lot of on wedding photographer’s sites but not on mine is a collection of portraits. There is good reason for this. Over the years I’ve developed a style of photography that strives to tell the true story of your wedding day. I call this documentary style wedding photography that you could describe as natural, candid, or uncontrived. Just to be clear on these definitions:

Natural: ‘in agreement with the character or makeup of, or circumstances surrounding, someone or something.’

Candid: ‘(of a photograph of a person) taken informally, especially without the subject’s knowledge.’

Uncontrived: ‘not appearing artificial.’

My thinking after 15 years of professional wedding photography is that I would much rather capture your day, with all the colours and guests and details that you chose, in exactly the way you go about enjoying it. (More about this in an upcoming blog post)

I do understand that sometimes an epic venue calls for epic portraits and in these situations I will gladly take the time to set up and capture a spectacular portrait that adds to the documentary coverage of your beautiful day. This is why I offer a morning after shoot, where we can get out and about, not worrying about time or making your guests wait for hours, where we can go shoot something awesome. Here are some of my favorite images from times that we did exactly that.

  1. Really great work Tim, so much so that I think you actually strike a great ballance and contrary to your believe and your strong stance toward documentary, you are actually a well rounded wedding photographer and that’s why you are major league!

    1. Thank you for the compliment Chris.

I really feel that my documentary style & approach has improved a lot and that’s it’s this sincere approach which will set me aside from the norm. I love making epic portrait photographs in epic light, but that’s something we see a lot of on wedding photographer blogs, especially in SA.

Documentary photography entails a lot more looking, a lot less control over lighting and therefore the resulting images are more creative and unique.

      That’s just my opinion 🙂
