Wedding – Vishnu & Sangeetha
This wedding remains one of my all-time favourites. Vishnu and Sangeetha managed to just beat the lockdown five years ago and celebrated a truly special day at Memoire in Johannesburg.
I was especially honoured that they chose me for my documentary style of photography—something a little less traditional when it comes to Indian weddings. When we started discussing the day in more detail, I invited my friend Patrick Furter to join me in capturing it. With his support, we were able to cover a wider range of moments: he focused on portraits and family photos, while I immersed myself in documenting the candid energy and emotions of the day. For me, this is the ideal way to capture every dimension of a Hindu wedding celebration.
What really stood out was how the black-and-white imagery allowed the emotion to shine through. Instead of being drawn first to the vibrant colours, viewers could really connect with the expressions—those fleeting moments of joy, love, and connection. It brought to mind a quote by photographer Ted Grant: “When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls.”
That said, the monochrome approach didn’t take away from the beauty of the attire—it actually highlighted the textures and craftsmanship in a way that often goes unnoticed.
Having two photographers on the day really allowed us to do justice to the full experience. Below is a glimpse into the kind of moments we captured from this beautiful celebration.
